Leprosy Treatment

What is Leprosy?

Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is a chronic infectious condition caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. It primarily affects the skin, peripheral nerves, mucosa of the upper respiratory tract, and eyes. With early diagnosis and proper treatment, leprosy is curable and complications can be prevented.

Symptoms of Leprosy:

  • Pale or reddish skin patches with reduced sensation
  • Numbness or tingling in hands and feet
  • Muscle weakness
  • Eye problems (dryness, vision loss in severe cases)
  • Thickened nerves, especially in elbows, knees, or ears

Treatment Options:

Leprosy is treated with **Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT)**, which is provided free of cost through government programs.

  • Combination of antibiotics such as **Rifampicin, Dapsone, and Clofazimine**
  • Duration of treatment varies: 6–12 months, depending on the severity
  • Anti-inflammatory medications for nerve pain and skin reactions
  • Surgical intervention in advanced cases (e.g., nerve decompression, reconstructive surgery)

Preventive Measures:

  • Early diagnosis and regular treatment to stop transmission
  • Screening of close contacts of affected individuals
  • Health education to reduce stigma and promote early care-seeking

Leprosy is **not highly contagious** and is curable. Early treatment prevents permanent damage and social stigma. If you notice skin patches with numbness or other symptoms, consult a dermatologist for evaluation and treatment.
